Why is My Brake Light On and What Should I Do About It?

You’re driving along just fine. There doesn’t seem to be any problems, but then your dash light up. Right there, among the dials that say you should probably slow down five mph and fueling up sometime in the next 86 miles, is a warning light. Your brake light is on, but what does it mean.

Maybe you tap the pedal real quick. You can still slow down at will, so this warning isn’t immediate, but how much time do you have? To get a better idea of what you are dealing with, let’s go over the most common culprits that cause your brake light to go on and what you should do about them.

First, check the parking brake.

For some models, the warning that the parking brake is engaged is the brake light on. Especially if the light comes on right when you start the car, this could be the case. It’s easy to forget if you put the brake in place or not and as you drive off.

While your car may resist, it will still drive off into the sunset with the brake still on. Doing this will cause wear on the brake lining, and your brakes will end up failing sooner.

Depending on the model, there is also that tricky middle ground with your parking brake. You may have released the brake, and it isn’t engaged, but the lever is just down enough to trigger the light. So even if you are sure you released the brake, if the light is glaring, release it again just to be sure.

If there isn’t an easy fix with the parking brake, then you have a more serious problem. You probably don’t want to be driving the vehicle, and your best bet is to get it looked at by a professional so they can diagnose and fix the problem before it gets bigger.

Look at the brake fluid.

Another possibility is that the brake fluid is low. If the fluid gets too low in your braking system, it will trigger your brake light. When this is the case, the problem is likely a leak. Unless you are familiar with every part of your braking system, having a professional assess your system is probably in order. They know where leaks are most likely to be found and have the expertise to fix them.

If there is a problem with the hydraulics in your car, that isn’t something to be taken lightly. The vehicle will have problems working safely and could fail at any time.

It could be the ABS

If the parking brake is fine and the fluid levels are in check, then the next most likely problem is with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). If this is the culprit, then the car needs to be looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. There aren’t any external parts to inspect or fluid levels to check.

Finding the problem will mean plugging in a special diagnostic tool that communicates with the car’s computer to see the problem code. A professional shop or dealership will have the tools to figure out a problem with your ABS.

Other possibilities For the Brake Light On

Those three problems are the most likely reasons for your Brake Light On to be on. They all the problems that you could be facing, but they are the ones you should rule out first before you start exploring other possibilities.

A brake sensor could be broken or malfunctioning. If the sensor goes out, this could also be a reason for the light to go off. This could mean there isn’t anything wrong with the car itself, but the system that detects problems.

The wiring on the car could also have issues. If this is the case, it could be wires getting corroded or worn, a bad connection, or a blown fuse. One way to tell if there is an electrical issue is to pay attention when you turn on your car. When you first turn the key, the dashboard should light up, and all the warning lights should illuminate. If there is a light that doesn’t respond, then that could mean there is an electrical issue.

Different models can also have different triggers for the brake light. If you are curious about what it means for your car, the owner’s manual is your best resource for specific information. Many newer cars have specific lights that indicate more specific problems.

If you find your dashboard lights staring at you, don’t ignore them. Your car may be driving well for now, but that could change at any moment. Have it looked over by a professional like one of our excellent technicians at Fresno Mazda, and get your car safely back on the road.
