If you’re in the market for a Mazda, you’ve already made one good decision by choosing to make your next vehicle a Mazda. Mazda vehicles are among the best models that are currently available on the mainstream auto market. Mazdas are high-performing, stylish, safe, and high-tech vehicle models that are both reliable and fun to drive. When you’re shopping for your Mazda, you have three options: a new model, a used model, or a certified pre-owned model. If you’re unaware of the benefits of purchasing a certified pre-owned vehicle or are unfamiliar with Mazda’s certified pre-owned vehicle program, keep reading to learn more about the difference between new, used, and certified pre-owned Mazda models.

New vs. Used Mazdas

The main difference between new and used Mazda models is obvious: new Mazdas have never been driven before, whereas used Mazdas have had at least one previous owner and have some number of miles logged on them. While new Mazdas offer drivers the advantage of getting to be the first driver behind the wheel of their vehicle, used Mazdas are significantly more affordable than brand-new Mazdas and they depreciate in value much more slowly.

New vs Used Mazda

If you’re going to purchase a used car with previous owners and driving history, you can’t go wrong with a used Mazda. Mazdas are among the most reliable vehicle models on the mainstream auto market. In 2021, reputable independent nonprofit consumer organization Consumer Reports ranked Mazda as the number-one most reliable vehicle brand in the auto industry. This means that Mazda vehicles do not break down as frequently as models from less reliable automakers, and they last longer on the road.

If you’re in the market for a used car, it is best to buy the most reliable vehicle possible because reliable vehicles depreciate in value more slowly and remain in safe and drivable condition for much longer than less reliable vehicle models. Virtually every Mazda model is ultra-reliable and will serve you well on the road for many years without requiring any major repairs, even if you opt to buy a used rather than a brand-new Mazda model.

Used vs. Certified Pre-Owned Mazdas

Underneath the umbrella of used Mazda models, there are two subcategories: standard used Mazdas and certified pre-owned Mazdas. Certified pre-owned vehicle models are very lightly used vehicles that have to pass a series of rigorous inspections and come with special warranties—in addition to meeting other strict requirements for quality and safety.

Many automakers have their own certified pre-owned vehicle programs. In fact, the increasing availability of certified pre-owned vehicle models has revolutionized the auto industry as a whole and has motivated many more drivers to make the choice to purchase a used rather than a brand-new vehicle model. Each automaker with a certified pre-owned vehicle program has its own set of requirements for which of its vehicles can qualify as certified pre-owned models. Keep reading to learn more about Mazda’s specific certified pre-owned vehicle program.

There are many advantages to purchasing a certified pre-owned Mazda rather than a standard used Mazda. In order to qualify as a certified pre-owned vehicle, a Mazda model must be a very well-maintained, late-model Mazda vehicle. Every certified pre-owned Mazda must pass a rigorous, 160-point inspection performed by a factory-trained Mazda technician. This inspection ensures the quality of a Mazda vehicle’s A/C system, interior, transmission, engine, brakes, exterior, and much more in order to make sure that all of the most important parts of the vehicle are working as they should.

Every certified pre-owned Mazda model also comes with a full vehicle history report that details the complete history of the given vehicle model. This history includes information about previous owners, previous collisions, maintenance and repairs, and more. Only vehicles with the cleanest histories are eligible to qualify as certified pre-owned Mazda models.

In addition to not having to pass rigorous inspections, standard used Mazdas also do not come with dealership warranties—although many are available with optional extended warranties. Certified pre-owned Mazda models, on the other hand, are available with a series of special warranties that make them more appealing to drivers. These dealership warranties include a 12-month or 12,000-mile limited warranty and a 7-year or 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
