What’s Happening Inside Your Car Battery?
Each cell has 16 lead plates. Half of the plates are treated with lead dioxide and have a positive charge. The other half is covered with lead sponges to maintain a negative charge. A separator is placed between the negative and positive plates to keep them from shorting out by touching.
There are conducting metal strips that run across each of the negative plates. A separate strip runs across the positive plates. Together, this creates a series for an amazing chemical reaction.
These plates all sit in an electrolyte solution that is mostly water but contains about 35% sulphuric acid. Sometimes, you’ll hear this referred to simply as battery fluid or “juice”. The solution acts as a conductor that helps carry the electrons across the whole assembly.
When you start your vehicle, the electrolyte solution inside the battery produces lead sulfate. This produces electrons on the positive plates and the electrons travel across the conducting metal to the negative side of the cell. Voila! 2 volts of electricity have been created.
The electrons are picked up by the positive plates of the second cell and travel through the circuit until they are released by the negative plates. Again, 2 volts more have been generated. This process repeats continuously until 12 volts have been created and the charge has traveled across all the battery cells.
Where Does the Electricity Go?
The electricity generated by your battery is transferred through the terminals. You’ll probably recognize these as the two large wires coming out of a positive and negative tap. If your headlights are going dim, your electrical systems are working properly, or you have problems starting your car, it could mean your terminals are loose or need to be cleaned.
